Lines: Samu Salminen to make his UConn debut
Less than a week after Salminen finally arrived in the US, the freshman will suit up for the Huskies.
UConn men’s hockey will take the ice against Boston College with a new face in the lineup. Freshman Samu Salminen will make his collegiate debut against the Eagles less than a week after finally joining the team. He’s set to wear No. 13.
Salminen joined up with the Huskies last weekend after a lengthy visa delay. Before that, he had been home in Finland taking online classes and playing with his former team, Jokerit U20.
Originally a Denver commit, Salminen ran into admissions with the defending national championships and UConn ended up landing him as a result. He chose the Huskies in August — which means it took over two months for his visa to finally arrive.
Initially, UConn didn’t plan to play him until the series against Maine next weekend. While the exact reasoning for his debut isn’t clear, it’s possible the loss of Ty Amonte (shoulder) for the BC game forced the Huskies’ hand by putting them down a center. We’ll know more after Mike Cavanaugh’s postgame press conference.
Puck drop between UConn and Boston College is set for 7:05 p.m. at the XL Center on ESPN+.
